Ruen (Руен) is a modern Bulgarian red grape variety, bred from a cross between Shiroka Melnishka Loza — the legendary native grape of the Struma Valley — and the international powerhouse Cabernet Sauvignon. Developed by the Institute of Viticulture and Enology in Pleven, Ruen was created to combine the regional spice and identity of Melnik with the structure, color, and longevity of Cabernet, resulting in a profoundly expressive, age-worthy red with strong southern Bulgarian character.

Ruen expresses the distinctive warm-spiced character of Shiroka Melnishka Loza, elevated by Cabernet’s body, color, and tannic strength. It’s typically oak-aged, revealing earthy and savory complexity over time.

Food Pairing
It is ideal with lamb chops, grilled meats, stews, and aged cheeses. It pairs beautifully with Kapama, wild boar, veal with forest mushrooms, and richly spiced Balkan cuisine.
What to Look For?
Expect a deep garnet color, aromas of black fruit, dried herbs, warm spice, and a powerful and long palate with well-integrated oak and firm but polished tannins.
Cellaring Potential
Capable of aging 7–12 years, gaining layers of leather, dried fig, and forest floor while softening its structure over time.
Blending Partners
It is often bottled as a varietal but may be blended with Melnishki Rubin, Rubin, or Cabernet Sauvignon for added complexity or softer edges.
Breeding Background & Regional Context
Ruen was created to strengthen the legacy of Shiroka Melnishka Loza by addressing its challenges: late ripening, low color, and light body. By crossing it with Cabernet Sauvignon, Bulgarian researchers produced a grape that ripens more reliably, offers intensity and aging potential, yet retains the distinct identity of the Melnik region.
Alternative Grapes
Try Rubin (Syrah × Nebbiolo) for a similar body and spice or Melnik 55 for a lighter, more aromatic style. International comparisons include Cabernet Franc or Tempranillo for structure with regional nuance.
