Flight Routes and Duration
No matter where you’re flying from, Bulgaria is within easy reach. From London to Sofia, it’s a brisk three-hour flight. If you’re jetting in from New York, expect a travel time of around 10 hours with one stopover. From the Middle East or Asia? A typical flight from Dubai or Qatar takes roughly six hours.
Booking Flights
Regarding booking, airline websites and platforms offer many options for direct and one—or two-stop flights, depending on your destination and flying habits. Always cross-check prices and keep an eye out for deals. Remember, booking well in advance can help secure lower fares.
Air Travel Procedures
The journey to Bulgaria starts before the wheels of your aircraft touch Bulgarian soil. It begins at your home airport with check-in and boarding procedures. Familiarize yourself with the norms of the airline you’re traveling with. Each airline has rules regarding online check-in availability, deadlines, baggage allowances, and restrictions.
Touchdown Bulgaria
Passport control is only required for citizens outside the European Union (EU). For non-EU residents – upon your arrival in Bulgaria, be prepared to go through immigration and customs procedures. Don’t fret; it’s all standard protocol! Make sure your travel documents are handy. A non-EU traveler should present a valid passport. Depending on your nationality, you may also need to show your visa or proof of onward travel. If you are not an EU citizen, please check if your stay will require a visa.
Luggage Policies
Baggage rules can vary from airline to airline, so make sure you’re well-versed with the luggage policies of your chosen carrier. This includes understanding their rules on carry-on baggage size, checked baggage weight limits, and additional charges for excess luggage. You can always purchase additional luggage allowance on the spot at the airport, but it is also more costly. Hand luggage allowance is typically one piece weighing between 8 to 10 kg. The checked-in luggage allowance is one piece between 20 and 23 kg.
In-flight Services
Depending on the airline and the flight length, you may have access to a range of in-flight services. These can include meals, beverages, in-flight entertainment, and Wi-Fi. Check with your airline beforehand to see what’s included in your fare and what may require additional payment. For example, Bulgaria Air and Turkish Air serve a range of meals for every passenger; a sandwich for the second class is free.
Visas and Legalities
Before jetting off to Bulgaria, it’s crucial to understand the visa requirements. Citizens of the EU, EEA, USA, Canada, Australia, and many other countries can enter Bulgaria without a visa for up to 90 days within 180 days. However, if you’re from a country that requires a visa for Bulgaria, be sure to apply well before your travel.
Visa Application Process
To apply for a Bulgarian visa, you must submit your application at the nearest embassy or consulate. Your application should include a completed visa application form, a recent photo, a valid passport, proof of travel insurance, a flight reservation, proof of accommodation, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Depending on the purpose of your visit, additional documents may be required.
Travel Document Check
Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay. Embarking on your Bulgarian journey requires a passport issued in the last ten years with a minimum of three (six months for some countries) months of validity. It’s best to check these specifics beforehand to avoid any last-minute hiccups.
Customs Clearance and Import Regulations
We compiled an extensive Q&A section regarding customs regulations, which generally are no different from EU customs regulations. Additionally, you can familiarize yourself with Bulgarian Customs regulations directly from the Bulgarian Customs website.
Medicinal and cosmetics CBD products are legal to import. See our FAQ on customs clearance.
Domestic Air Travel
Exploring Bulgaria doesn’t stop at Sofia, Varna, or Burgas. Domestic flights between Sofia, Varna, and Burgas are available and can be more frequent in the summer.
Baggage Policies
As with international flights, familiarize yourself with your airline’s baggage policy. This includes understanding their regulations on the size and weight of checked and carry-on luggage.
Travel Insurance
Your journey to Bulgaria should be filled with delightful discoveries, not unexpected setbacks. A comprehensive travel insurance policy is your safety net while exploring Bulgaria’s enchanting corners.
Why Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance covers various unforeseen circumstances – medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. It’s not just about safeguarding your journey; it’s about ensuring peace of mind.
Coverage to Look For
A good travel insurance policy should cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation, personal liability, trip cancellation, and baggage loss or damage. Some insurers offer additional coverage for activities like winter sports – a must if you’re planning to hit Bulgaria’s ski slopes.
Where to Buy Travel Insurance?
Before considering buying insurance, check if, for example, trip cancellation and baggage loss or damage insurance is not provided through your credit card already. Of course, you must purchase the services with the corresponding credit card to cover them. Also – your healthcare insurance may cover certain events and healthcare-related incidents already, even if they happen abroad.
Check with your healthcare provider which insurance they can recommend, and many can be purchased online directly from the provider.
Ground Transportation from Airports
Upon landing in Bulgaria, various convenient ground transportation options await to whisk you to your final destination.
From Sofia Airport (SOF)
Sofia Airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 (T1) is older and typically hosts budget flights. Termina 2 (T2) hosts most flights from and to European and Asian destinations. T2 offers several options to reach the city center. You can grab a taxi, rent a car, or opt for public transportation. Line M4 of the Sofia Metro directly connects the airport to the city center, offering a quick and budget-friendly commute. See how to get from Sofia Airport to the city center.
From Varna Airport (VAR)
Varna Airport is just around 10 kilometers from the city center. Taxis are readily available, but use the licensed ones to avoid inflated fares. You can also rent a car or use the public bus service.
You can use Bus No. 409 for transportation to and from Varna Airport. It takes less than 20 minutes to get to the city center and around 50 minutes to reach Golden Sands resort. Buses, which leave every 15 minutes or less, are stationed at the bus stop in front of Terminal 2 Arrivals. You can buy a ticket directly on the bus.
From Burgas Airport (BOJ)
Burgas Airport is approximately 10 kilometers from the city center. Similar to Varna, taxis, car rentals, and public buses are available for your commute to the city.
You can take Bus No. 15 to reach the central bus station in Burgas. From there, buses or minibusses can transport you to the resorts both north and south of the town.
Car Rentals
If you prefer a self-drive option, all three airports house several car rental companies. Major international companies like Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and domestic providers offer a range of vehicles. Check out our car rental guide for more details and suggestions!
Travel Tips for Air Travelers
Jetting off to Bulgaria is an exciting prospect. Here are a few nuggets of advice to make your air travel experience smoother and your stay even more enjoyable.
Timing is Key
While Bulgaria is a year-round destination, the time of your visit may depend on your preferred activities. Winter is your best bet if you’re heading for the ski slopes. Sofia Airport provides quicker access to ski resorts. For beach lovers, the summer months are ideal. Varna and Burgas Airports provide speedier access to beach resorts.
Pack Smart
The climate varies across the year, so pack accordingly. Winters can be cold with heavy snowfall, especially in mountainous regions, so warm clothing is a must. Summers on the coast can be hot, so don’t forget your swimwear and sun cream!
Money Matters
While credit and debit cards are widely accepted, carrying some Bulgarian currency (Bulgarian lev) for small expenses is advisable. There are plenty of ATMs and currency exchange offices in the cities. Avoid exchanging money in top locations and hot tourist spots. As a general rule, exchanging money at a bank is always safer. Stay Connected
If you plan to stay connected, consider purchasing a Bulgarian SIM card. They’re available at the airport and offer affordable data and calling options. Popular providers in Bulgaria are A1, Vivacom, Yettel. They all advertise packages for tourists.
WiFi networks are pretty much everywhere, and there are many unlocked ones. Restaurants, bars, and hotels provide free access for customers. WiFi speed is typically excellent.
Language Basics
English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, but a few Bulgarian phrases will surely win you some smiles. Try “Zdravei” (Hello) and “Blagodarya” (Thank you).

Returning Home
As your Bulgarian adventure draws close, here’s what you need to know about wrapping up your journey and catching your flight home.
Check-out Procedures
Hotels in Bulgaria typically check out around 10:30 a.m. You must settle any outstanding bills and return your room keys and passes. Many hotels can store your luggage securely if you have time to explore before your flight.
Transportation to the Airport
Consider your options for returning to the airport. Taxis, public transport, or pre-arranged hotel shuttles are commonly available. Allow ample time to navigate through traffic and reach the airport.
Airport Check-in
Arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight to allow time for check-in, security procedures, and any last-minute duty-free shopping. Airlines generally recommend online check-in to expedite the process.
Customs and Departure
Before leaving Bulgaria, you might need to clear customs. This applies if you’re carrying certain goods or if the total value of your purchases exceeds a specific limit. Ensure to keep all your receipts and pack the items accessibly in case of inspections.
Shopping at the Airports
Several shops are available at airports in Sofia, Burgas, and Varna. However, it’s recommended to complete most of your shopping during your stay in Bulgaria and only leave a minimal amount for the airport. Generally, the shopping experience at Bulgarian airports does not match other European or Asian airports due to the limited number of shops and product variety.
In-flight Tips
Prepare for your flight home. Stay hydrated, keep some snacks handy, and carry a good book or download your favorite series or movie in case of long flights. Learn about boarding groups and the logic of keeping your luggage above your seat.
