Cape Emine

A Majestic Natural Landmark in Bulgaria

GuideBG Glimpse

Cape Emine, the easternmost point of the Balkan Mountain, is a remarkable natural landmark that offers a unique and inspiring experience for all who visit. This area is a conditional boundary between the Northern and Southern Black Sea coast. It is located just 79 kilometers south of Varna, 54 kilometers north of Burgas, and 14 kilometers south of Obzor.

The cape was declared a natural landmark in 1976 to preserve the area’s unique geological and botanical sites. With a protected area of 50 hectares, Cape Emine is a vertical, almost 60-meter-high cliff surrounded by hundreds of underwater and above-water ridges over 250 meters from the cape. Due to its treacherous conditions, the coast is rugged for shipping, and sailors avoid it. A lighthouse stands at the cape, directing vessels to Burgas bay.

The area around Cape Emine also boasts a rich cultural heritage, including the remains of a medieval monastery and the fortress Emona. The village of Emona is near, and the European pedestrian road E-3 ends at Cape Emine. The road in its Bulgarian part is from Kom to Emine. The protected area, Irakli, is located north of the cape.

Visiting Cape Emine is an unforgettable experience, with stunning views and awe-inspiring nature. The walk is safe to do with kids. In May, the area is green and covered in blooming flowers and herbs, with few people around. Later in the summer, during the active tourist season, the place comes alive with groups of tourists, but it remains a pleasant and peaceful place for relaxation. Walking along the path that branches off from the asphalt road 100 meters north of the entrance to the military division (the first one before the village), it takes about 30 minutes to reach the southern end of the Irakli beach.

If you want to visit Cape Emine by car, turn off the Varna-Burgas road towards Irakli (the junction is between Banya and Obzor and is marked with a sign). After a kilometer and a half, there is another junction where you need to turn right. From here to the village of Emona, where you can park your car and continue on foot to Cape Emine, the road is in pretty bad condition, with only remains of asphalt in some places. Drive with caution.

Cape Emine symbolizes Bulgaria’s natural and cultural heritage, and its beauty and majesty are awe-inspiring. It represents the perfect blend of nature and culture and provides a unique opportunity to experience both simultaneously. The area offers many activities for visitors, such as hiking, sightseeing, and learning about the history and culture of the region.
