In some countries, birthdays are not enough. The calendar itself joins the party. That is the idea behind name days: special dates when people celebrate the saint, feast, or tradition connected with their first name.
Name days are especially popular in parts of Europe, including Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Serbia, Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden. In many of these countries, name-day calendars cover almost every day of the year. This does not mean every day becomes a national feast, but it does mean that somewhere, someone probably has a reason to receive flowers, cake, phone calls, or at least a cheerful “Happy name day!”
Bulgaria takes name days seriously. Some of the best-known celebrations include Ivanovden, Georgiovden, Dimitrovden, Nikolaovden, Tsvetnitsa, and Todorovden. A practical count puts Bulgaria at roughly 120 commonly celebrated name-day occasions, although many more names are associated with them. That is the important distinction: one name day can celebrate many names. Ivanovden, for example, is not just for Ivan, but also for related names such as Ivanka, Yoan, Yoana, Vanyo, and others.
In other countries, especially those with formal name-day calendars, the number of calendar occasions can approach 365. Greece, Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, and the Baltic countries all have strong name-day traditions, although the social importance varies. Some countries celebrate name days almost like birthdays. In others, the tradition is more regional, more religious, or more common among older generations.
For visitors to Bulgaria, name days are one of the sweetest cultural surprises. You may suddenly discover that a friend, colleague, host, taxi driver, or village neighbor is being celebrated today.
The safe rule is simple: congratulate first, ask details later.

In short, birthdays are personal, but name days are wonderfully social. And in Bulgaria, the calendar always seems ready with another excuse for cake.
