TL;DR (all links below)
Emergencies: Dial 112 first. PSS (Mountain Rescue Service) direct line 1470 (all mobile networks) and +359 2 963 2000; advice line 1471. Install the free PSS app to send GPS coordinates.
Weather & avalanche: Check NIMH mountain forecast + local station data; use Avalanche Bulgaria in winter.
Markings: Summer = painted blazes (white + red/blue/green/yellow). Winter = pole lines/azimuth plates on exposed ridges. Summer routes can cross avalanche terrain—don’t follow them in winter.
Not all trails are perfectly marked/maintained. Cross-check routes on BGMountains (online/offline) and park notices.
Emergency contacts: who to call, how to call
- 112 is the universal EU emergency number. Please provide details about what happened, where it occurred, the number of people involved, their condition, your current coordinates, and a contact number for a callback.
- Mountain Rescue Service (PSS), Bulgarian Red Cross:
- 1470 (all mobile operators, incl. International) – emergency; +359 2 963 2000 – central 24/7 post (see How to dial)
- 1471 – information/advice (non-emergency). PSS
- No mobile signal? Send a person to higher ground or to the nearest hut (many have a radio/landline) to raise the alarm to 112 or PSS.
- PSS mobile app (iOS/Android): one-tap call/SMS with GPS coordinates to PSS control center. Install before you go. Google Play or Apple.
Insurance: PSS and Red Cross explicitly recommend mountain insurance. It’s inexpensive and helps cover rescue-related costs; buy it before trips!
Weather, avalanche & conditions — where to check
- NIMH (National Institute of Meteorology & Hydrology) — official mountain forecast pages (Cherni Vrah, Botev, Musala, etc.). Meteo.bg
- PSS “Mountains” pages — live station readings (temp/wind/snow) for Rila, Stara Planina, etc. PSS
- Avalanche Bulgaria — community bulletins & education; follow especially for Pirin, Rila, Vitosha. (Bulgaria has no official national avalanche center issuing daily bulletins; treat winter travel cautiously) – Service is currently disconnected.
- Resort status & SOS: Bansko / Borovets / Pamporovo post on-site emergency numbers and slope status during season.
Trail markings in Bulgaria (summer vs winter)
- Summer markings: painted blazes (white rectangle with a red/blue/green/yellow stripe) on trees/rocks/signposts; color = route family, not difficulty.
- Winter markings: exposed ridges often have metal poles with azimuth plates (spaced for visibility above snow). European Hiking Federation (ERA)
- Important: Summer routes may traverse avalanche-prone slopes; do not blindly follow summer paint in winter.
- Reality check: Waymarking quality varies; storms, forestry, and time can erase signs. Always carry a map and an offline GPS device, and be prepared to turn back if needed.
Huts (хижи), how they work & where to find them
- Bulgaria has an extensive hut/shelter network (dorms, simple meals, cash preferred, variable phone coverage). Call ahead for beds, heating, and water.
- Where to look: Bulgarian Tourist Union (BTS) hut directory; Kom-Emine’s overview. Български Туристически Съюз (currently only available in the Bulgarian language).
Planning & navigation tools
- Maps & GPS:
- BGMountains online/offline (kade.si & Garmin downloads) + paper if possible. Community-built maps are powerful, but they can have legacy/overgrown paths—always cross-check with park notices.
- Park notices & closures: Rila NP and Pirin NP publish rules, seasonal notes, and contact points.
Popular, comparatively safe summer day routes (fair weather only)
These are well-trodden and signposted in season, but still require proper footwear, layers, water, and a charged phone, along with an offline map. Check weather/lift status; avoid storms and fog.
- Vitosha: Aleko Hut → Cherni Vrah (2290 m)
- Classic summit near Sofia; red blazes & winter poles; multiple variants from Aleko.
- Time varies by loop/pace; the most straightforward route is an out-and-back via the marked ridge, such as E4 in Bulgaria by the European Hiking Federation, or the Cherni Vrah from Aleko, as featured by Hikes & Walks.
- Rila: Beli Iskar Eco-trail (boardwalks/bridges)
- Gentle woodland “eco path” just outside Rila NP, with “7 bridges” over the river; family-friendly in summer. myborovets.net
- Pirin: Bezbog Hut → Popovo Lake (chairlift approach)
- Ride from Gotse Delchev → Bezbog Hut, then a marked path to a spectacular glacial lake; widely regarded as a moderate, scenic day out in good weather. Check lift hours. SummitPost
- Vitosha: Boyana Waterfall (from Boyana district)
- Shorter forest hike; expect steep sections and slippery rock in shoulder seasons. Use the marked variant, not the steep fall-line shortcut. park-vitosha.org
Skip in poor conditions/winter without skills & gear: Seven Rila Lakes rim, high Pirin ridges (e.g., Koncheto), and any route above treeline during storms or strong winds. Even in summer, rapid weather changes are routine on E-paths across Bulgaria’s high mountains. European Hiking Federation (ERA)
Season-by-season hazards (what to expect)
- Summer: thunderstorms, sudden fog, afternoon hail above treeline; carry rain layers, insulation, headlamp.
- Autumn: early snow/ice on north aspects; shorter days.
- Winter/early spring: avalanches, cornices, whiteout; follow winter poles only with complete kit & skills (axe/crampons, nav, avalanche awareness).
Quick safety checklist
- Share your plan & turnaround time with someone.
- Take a map, an offline GPS device, a power bank, a headlamp, a first aid kit, an extra warm layer, gloves/hat, and water & snacks.
- Check NIMH and PSS station data before you go
- Save 112, PSS 1470, and the PSS app on your phone.

Notes on trail quality & signage
Bulgaria’s trail network is extensive, but maintenance varies; fallen trees, landslides, or faded blazes are normal, and some crowd-sourced maps include legacy/overgrown paths. Treat any single app/layer as advisory, not gospel; verify on the ground and be ready to turn back. Help.locusmap.eu
