Speed Limits and Speeding in Bulgaria FAQs

Answers to frequently asked questions regarding speed limits, speeding violations, and related fines in Bulgaria.

Can I lose my driver’s license for speeding?

Yes, you can. You can lose your driver’s license under the following conditions:

  • If you drive 31 mph or 50 km/h over the speed limit in built-up areas, you can lose your driver’s license for up to 3 months
  • If you are caught speeding repeatedly
  • If you drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol

What is the tolerance margin of speed cameras?

The tolerance margin is an unofficial metric. It highly depends on the speed-measuring equipment that is used. Generally, older equipment reproduces less accurate results and can have greater tolerance. In most cases, fixed cameras will flash you if you go 10% faster than the limit. However, speed measuring may be more precise and selective with the new equipment. We do not recommend relying on the tolerance margin when you drive in Bulgaria.

How much will I pay for speeding?

Speeding offenses are penalized by fines, and excessive spending has administrative consequences. Review the section above to learn more about speeding fines.
