What is MYP, and What is DP?

A simple guide to understanding the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP)

What is MYP?

MYP = Middle Years Programme

  • For students ages 11–16 (roughly Grades 6–10).
  • Focuses on building skills, especially Approaches to Learning (ATL).
  • Uses inquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary units, and real-world applications.
  • Includes subjects like: Sciences, Math, I&S, Language & Literature, Arts, Design, PE/Health, Drama.
  • Ends with two major tasks:
    • Personal Project (one long independent project)
    • MYP eAssessments (optional, depending on the school)

Think of the MYP as the foundation stage where students learn how to learn, think critically, and communicate clearly.

What is DP?

DP = Diploma Programme

  • For students ages 16–19 (Grades 11–12).
  • A more advanced, pre-university curriculum.
  • Students choose 6 subjects (3 at Higher Level, 3 at Standard Level).
  • Includes three core components:
    • TOK (Theory of Knowledge) – critical thinking about knowledge
    • CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) – personal development through experiences
    • EE (Extended Essay) – a 4,000-word research essay

The DP is academically rigorous and recognized by universities worldwide.

Simple Summary

  • MYP = Skill-building, exploration, and developing learning habits (ages 11–16).
  • DP = Advanced, university-level preparation with deep subject learning (ages 16–19).
