Perperikon

Discover the Mystical Perperikon in the Eastern Rhodopes

GuideBG Glimpse

Perperikon is an ancient city on a rocky peak at 470 meters in the Eastern Rhodopes. It is a sacred rock city, a capital, and a fortress with a king’s palace, where human hands work every inch of the rock surface. Perperikon means “sanctuary on a rocky peak”, dating back to the late Bronze and Iron Ages.

The history of Perperikon is fascinating and dates back thousands of years. It is believed that during the late Bronze and Iron Ages, a sanctuary dedicated to the god Dionysus was built on the rocky peak. The rituals performed there were related to wine and fire, and it is said that predictions were made based on the height of the flames. However, some researchers believe that Perperikon was not a sanctuary dedicated to Dionysus but a megalithic cover.

The Eastern Rhodopes

The Eastern Rhodopes have been inhabited since ancient times. Favorable living conditions along the Arda River and its tributaries attracted people as early as the Neolithic era. This was when the ancient inhabitants of the mountain began to bring offerings to the Sacred Rock, associated with their religious beliefs and symbolizing the Sun God. This marks the beginning of Perperikon, the sacred city. Centuries later, the site was rediscovered during the late Bronze Age, and new cult practices and rituals began. Over time, a large cult complex was formed, consisting of dozens of rooms, halls, staircases, and corridors reflecting an elaborate religious ceremony. The cult became more complicated with the addition of new buildings, priestly societies, and residential quarters, creating a city reminiscent of ancient times. In 1362, during the Ottoman invasion, Perperikon was utterly destroyed, and its population was taken into slavery. The place was abandoned and forgotten for many years, and the memories of its greatness faded away.

Today, Perperikon symbolizes spirituality, culture, and ancient history. It is considered one of the most energetic places in the world, and people believe it has a solid connection to the universe. Visitors who enter Perperikon feel like they are entering a mystical world and are transported back to the ancient civilizations that once thrived on its hilly slopes.

Perperikon is a megalithic sanctuary and the largest one on the Balkan Peninsula, with an area of 5,000 square meters. It is where different cultures and civilizations have lived and left their mark, from the Romans to the Goths, Byzantines, and Bulgarians. The energy of the place is difficult to illustrate in words, and it is no wonder that many legends and prophecies are associated with it.

One such legend states that two prophecies were made from the altar of Perperikon. The first foretold the great conquest and glory of Alexander the Great, and the second predicted the rule of the first Roman emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian August. These prophecies are just a tiny example of the mystic and magical energy that surrounds Perperikon.

Perperikon is a true gem of Bulgaria and a place that should not be missed. It is a place where spirituality, culture, and history meet, and visitors can feel the energy and connection to the universe. It is a place that will leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits it.
